Red Sox legend Curt Schilling is coming to Bangor

“I’m not sure I can think of any scenario more enjoyable than making 55,000 people from New York shut up.” That famous line was spoken by Curt Schilling heading into the American League Championship Series in 2004. 15 years after helping the Sox complete the greatest comeback in MLB history, Yankee fans remain speechless while Sox fans can’t stop talking about it.

The amazing season of the 2004 Red Sox will be the main topic of conversation Saturday July 27 when the Sports Chowdah presents a Cookout With Curt at Bangor Municipal Golf Course.

Curt Schilling won 21 games in 2004, was an All Star and finished second in the Cy Young voting. He became part of New England sports lore by pitching against the Yankees with blood seeping through his sock in a must win game 6 at Yankee Stadium.

That whole season was a rollercoaster ride. Coming of the stinging loss in the 2003 ALCS, MLB voided a trade that would have brought A Rod to the team. Eventually Nomar was shipped out, and Manny was just being Manny as the team did naked pull ups and shots of Jack before playoff games.

Under the leadership of Terry Francona and Theo Epstein, the youngest GM in history, the “Idiots” won thanks to a once in a lifetime steal by Dave Roberts, Big Papi heroics, and Jason Veritek sticking his mitt right in A-Rod’s face!

Schill was part of a unique cast of characters. Johnny Damon. Kevin Millar. Derek Lowe. And Pedro Martinez, who did not alway see eye to eye with Schill.

Schilling helped the Sox win the 2007 series as well.

Schilling pitched for 20 years compiling a 214-146 record and an ERA of 3.46. He pitched best in the playoffs where he went 11-2 with an ERA of 2.26. He was a six time All Star and also won a World Series with Arizona.

He finished 5th this year in the Hall of Fame voting. The top four were all elected.
